At Balcombe, we use Jigsaw to help us plan and teach our PSHE and RSHE curriculum. Jigsaw provides a complete, structured scheme of work that covers all statutory RSHE requirements while promoting emotional literacy, resilience, and social skills.
Jigsaw is a progressive and spiral scheme of learning. In planning the lessons, Jigsaw PSHE ensures that learning from previous years is revisited and extended, adding new concepts, knowledge and skills as appropriate. The programme is organized into six half-term “Puzzles” (units), with each class working on the same Puzzle at its own level. As we have mixed age classes at Balcombe, the content from each Puzzle for children in Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2), Lower Key Stage 2 (Years 3 and 4) and Upper Key Stage 2 (Years 5 and 6) has been organised into a two-year cycle for each phase of learning.
The six Puzzles are:
Being Me in My World – understanding self, rights, and responsibilities
Celebrating Difference – diversity, inclusion, and respect
Dreams and Goals – aspirations, perseverance, and achievement
Healthy Me – physical and mental health, wellbeing, and self-care
Relationships – friendships, family, and social skills
Changing Me – growth, puberty, and personal development
Each Puzzle includes six lessons. Lessons incorporate mindfulness practice, reflection, and “Pause Points” to help children process learning and develop self-awareness.
The linked Balcombe CofE Primary Knowledge Progression Map, details the spiral knowledge and skills progression within all six Puzzles (units of work) within a two-year cycle for each phase.
